The 2nd Lyceum of Kos is  an upper secondary state school with 260 students and 35 teachers and is situated in the border island of Kos. Kos which  is located in the south-eastern Aegean Sea.

Our school possesses library, ICT lab, physics and chemistry labs, gym and an open football course 5x5 with plastic floor rug currently under construction. It prepares students, aged 15 to 18, for university education in science, economics and humanities.

Our pupils are well-motivated and have high-achieving goals.  In addition, our school has a clear intention to provide international influences, such as student and teacher trainees exchange and teacher trainers from universities, to create various arenas for language- and interdisciplinary collaborations in projects using ICT and digital forums. In addition, we aim to create the opportunity for personal meetings with students from other countries and study trips to implement the learning of democratic and ethic values. It is a central policy in our school that pupils must develop good knowledge of foreign languages, linked with key competences for employability such as ICT skills, creativity and team-work, in order not only to increase their chances of finding good jobs in the future but also to acquire basic knowledge, common to educated persons and the capacity to expand that base over their lifetime so that they develop an integrated personality.

The students of our school come from different social backgrounds. Some are immigrants from countries of East Europe. We have students with different religions. Most of our students are Christian but we also have a minority of Muslim students. Although our students have the opportunity to communicate and contact with people from other countries (Kos is a tourist resort), we feel it is very important for students in this mixed community to begin to see themselves as citizens of tomorrow’s Europe, and to see Greece in the wider context of diversity within a common European heritage.

Furthermore, by promoting contact with European countries, we aim to acquire a deep knowledge of various educational systems, methods and teaching tools as well as to create cooperations. Through this process our goal is to give the students stimuli so as to become more tolerant of various cultures.

Our international projects and activities are the following:

In 2007 a YOUTH program our school coordinated was a project named MEDICULTE and it was an itinerant involving 4 partners from the Mediterranean. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=PixFGTnLxDs

During 2013-2015 we participated in a Comenius project with 11 other countries (http://comenius.logrojec.pl/) related to the European Citizenship.

During 2014-2016 we coordinated an Erasmus+ KA2 Strategic Partnership (school to school) in the field of education, named Safe Internet For All (SIFA). Have a look at our project’s website if you like: http://www.sifaplus.eu and the project description: http://www.sifaplus.eu/en/the-project  SIFA was the highest scoring among hundreds of applicants and the first project of its kind to be approved in the field of education in Greece. The Greek National Agency (IKY) presented the SIFA Erasmus+ project as an excellent project example and the coordinator of the project lectured about project management to teachers from all over Greece. IKY also invited the project coordinator to present SIFA as an example of good practice for KA2 projects in an International Conference in Bonn Germany 17-19 May 2017.

Our school, continuing its productive field of activity, the development of good practices and cooperation with other European schools within the framework of planning, organisation and application of ERASMUS+, participated in more KA2 programs since 2016. One called “European students’ Climate Report” (agreement 2016-1-SE01-KA201-022171) focused on the creation of a framework to help teachers and students to work on the field of universal temperature and the climatic changes which take place. Besides our school, five European schools from Sweden, Slovakia, France, Italy and Spain took part in the program. The program worked under the supervision and help of special researchers and two organisations of the University of Technology of Lullea, a town of Sweden, and the organisation for the prevention, the environment and energy conservation as well, in the area of Emilla-Romagna in Italy. Another program in which our school participated dealt with the issue of immigration. The idea behind the program was to sensitize the participants to the challenges they are asked to face living in a multicultural society and to search for effective solutions on this matter. The knowledge and understanding of the perennial phenomenon of immigration formed the basis so that the students, equipped with the appropriate tools, played an active role and hopefully will make the right decisions in the future for the benefit of the society. What is more, this program encouraged dialogue between students of various cultures and was part of the school benefits which arised from a deep research on the issue of immigration. The title of the program was “We are all immigrants of this world” (agreement 2016-1-PL01-KA219-026099-4) and it sent the optimistic message of the understanding of the relations shaped in today’s multicultural Europe Project site: http://www.weareallmigrants.eu/

Moreover, it is worth mentioning that our school was awarded twice with the third place in educational robotics competitions among all Greek schools.

Our website is working only in Greek, but we will introduce English pages as well (http://2lyk-ko.dod.sch.gr/).
